1. What is Salt Marsh Kids?

​

​Salt Marsh Kids is a 501(c)(3) based in Charleston, South Carolina.  We are dedicated to

connecting children with the power of nature.  Through immersive outdoor education,

storytelling, and community partnerships, our goal is to nurture resilience, agency, and

wonder in every child.

  

2. Who do you serve?

 

We serve Title I students from underserved communities across South Carolina.

Our programs are designed to reach kids who might not otherwise have access to safe,

enriching outdoor experiences.

 

3. What makes Salt Marsh Kids different?

​

• Nature as the classroom: We use the salt marsh, beach, and other coastal ecosystems as living laboratories.

• Values‑driven: Our work is guided by dignity, resilience, and community wisdom, aligned with the Woodson Principles.

• Whole‑child focus: We integrate ecological literacy with experiences that foster connection, personal growth, and the ability to make wise and compassionate choice

• Equality at the center: We remove barriers like transportation and related costs so every child can participate.

 

4. What kinds of programs do you offer?

​

• Outdoor Expeditions: ocean seining and beach ecology, kayaking, birding, cast netting, crabbing, and various salt marsh exploration programs from land or on a motorboat by a licensed USCG credentialed Master Captain and Naturalist.

• Storytelling & Journaling: Encouraging reflection, creativity, and voice.

• School Partnerships: Seasonal field trips and curriculum support for Title I schools.

5. How do you measure impact?

   

We use both qualitative stories and portfolio‑based tools to track growth in:

• Resilience and agency

• Environmental literacy

• Social‑emotional skills

• Sense of belonging and hope for the future.

• Surveys are often offered to Admin, teachers, Parents, and Students.

 

6. How is Salt Marsh Kids funded?

 

We are supported through a mix of private donations, grants, and community       

partnerships. The vast majority of proceeds from private donors go directly to

implementation, programming, and transportation for students, with a nominal amount supporting essential administrative costs.

 

7. How can I support Salt Marsh Kids?

• Donate: Every gift helps remove outdoor education barriers for children.

• Volunteer: Join us on trips, mentor youth, or help with events.

• Partner: Schools, churches, and community groups can collaborate with us to expand access for the children we serve.

• Spread the word: Share our story and invite others to get involved.

 

8. Why is transportation such a big focus?

​

For many of our students, the biggest barrier to outdoor learning is simply getting to the 

program location. Transportation costs are significant, and by covering them, we ensure that

every child—regardless of circumstance—can step onto the beach or into the salt marsh and

experience its wonder.
